Japan’s first Starbucks Reserve Roastery opened in February 2019 along the Meguro River in Tokyo—one of the city’s most celebrated cherry blossom destinations. Designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the project delicately weaves traditional Japanese aesthetics with Starbucks’ contemporary spirit.
Inside, 2,100 copper cherry blossom installations cascade through the space, echoing Nakameguro’s iconic spring scenery and establishing the roastery as one of the most visually distinctive Starbucks locations worldwide.
For this project, Mexarts Contract collaborated across borders to deliver a spatial and product solution rooted in local identity. Guided by a philosophy of contextual design, light-toned oak was carefully selected as the primary material, shaping a calm, neutral, and naturally refined atmosphere. The result is an immersive environment where guests experience a singular dialogue between cherry blossoms, coffee, and craftsmanship—an expression of place, culture, and quiet beauty.
